Highlights
“Give me a fish, and I eat for a day. Teach me to fish, and I eat for a lifetime.” This a popular expression that can be applied to education.
Reading is a tool for learning. To study any topic or subject, students will need to also study language.
For example, “Biology is not plants and animals. It is language about plants and animals.”
Students need to read newspapers, magazine articles, textbooks, brochures, library books, and other printed material so that they can think about and learn their subjects.
Teachers, parents, and students themselves are responsible for helping individuals in the classroom become independent lifelong learners. The way to do this is to develop strong readers and writers.

Thinking, Learning, and Reading Strategies
Successful learners use self-monitoring when they are reading, learning, and thinking. They ask themselves, "Am I understanding this?" Am I getting what I need? Does this make sense?"
Self-monitoring is checking in with one's self about what is going on inside the mind to be able to see how learning and/or thinking is going.
The other part of self-monitoring is repair work. This means that if a person senses that he/she is not understanding something, then
they need to do something about it.
When learning breaks down, good thinkers STOP! AFter that, they IDENTIFY the source of the problem. Then they find a SOLUTION for the problem before going on to the next section.
To find a solution, successful learners ask themselves, "Now, what do I need from this information? What is important?" and study it carefully before learning anything new.

Motivating Students
Students who are not motivated present parents and teachers with two challenges: thinking that needs to be changed, and finding out what will interest the student. Teachers can adjust the amount of work until a student gains confidence. And they can offer several ways to do the same assignment such as an art project, or a book report, or presentation.
However, parents must be involved also. Parents can provide a well-lit and quiet place to study. They can also set aside a certain time each day for homework and have supplies ready. Try to answer questions if your child has them. And communicate on a regular basis with your child's teacher. And finally do not compare one student with someone who is doing better than he is. Instead, focus on how much a student has improved with his own work.

Students choose the LC activities that they are interested in. Some of the activities are required, but many are optional. Students may listen to a book on tape, play a learning skills game, or choose from a menu of other activities. This week's LC activities are: USA map puzzle; dry erase work find puzzles; 50 states flash cards. Students should start thinking about a book they want to read for their daily reading. This is a daily homework assignment and grades are given for this. ** Reading and Spelling Test on Wednesday over Amelia's Road. The new story this week is Sarah, Plain and Tall. Each Wednesday, there is a spelling test and a reading test over the current story the class is studying. Students should take their folders home on Tuesday so that they can do some extra studying at home. This Week Oct. 20 - 24 More News!

HighlightsStudents should be settling into the routine of school by the end of this week. Everyone did a great job learning the classroom rules. They also learned the procedures for asking to get a drink of water and asking to use the bathroom. Great job class! Each Wednesday, there is a spelling test and a reading test over the current story the class is studying. Students should take their folders home on Tuesday so that they can do some extra studying at home. Insha'Allah, in the upcoming week, students will be expected to read for 20 minutes a day. This is a daily homework assignment and grades are given for this. This Week Oct. 13 - 17 More News!

HighlightsWelcome Back: I hope everyone enjoyed their summer break! This week is the first week of school. Everybody is getting used to each other and getting used to new routines. As students move up the education ladder, work gets more a little challenging and quantity of work increases.
